Maverick is a hot pilot. When he encounters a pair of MiGs over the Persian Gulf, his wingman is clearly outflown and
freaks. On almost no fuel, Maverick is able to talk him back down to the Carrier. When his wingman turns in his wings,
Maverick is moved up in the standings and sent to the Top Gun Naval Flying School. There he fights the attitudes of the
other pilots and an old story of his father's death in combat that killed others due to his father's error. Maverick
struggles to be the best pilot, stepping on the toes of his other students and in a different way to Charlie, a civilian
instructor to whom he is strongly attracted.

Due giovani amici, Pete "Maverick"
Mitchell e Nick "Goose" Bradshaw, riescono ad essere ammessi alla Scuola di caccia da combattimento della Marina Usa, di
stanza a Miramar (California). La scuola seleziona con severità assoluta gli allievi: chi arriva alla fine deve
essere "il meglio del meglio" per preparazione, disciplina, senso del dovere. Succede che Maverick faccia fatica ad
adattarsi a queste regole, dal momento che quando è in volo troppo spesso si lascia andare ad iniziative a sorpresa,
fortemente sgradite al comandate della scuola. Neanche il rapporto sentimentale con Charlie, la bionda istruttrice,
riesce a calmare Maverick, il quale coinvolge nelle sue scorribande l'amico Goose, che finirà col perdere la vita in
un incidente. Maverick, sconvolto, cade in una crisi depressiva, nella quale si agita anche il ricordo del padre, a sua
volta pilota, morto in una missione in modo misterioso. A risollevare il giovane arriva finalmente l'autentico battesimo
dell'aria: un allarme, una sfida con arerei nemici, la vittoria. Maverick recupera fiducia e anche l'amore.
